Trapline Tips | Blend Where You Been

Being a successful trapper is a combination of numerous quick and detail oriented tasks.  Here's one of those detailed tips that'll make you look like a pro.

Blend Where You Been.

After you've made your set, bait and lured, and packed your tools the job is done, right? Wrong! There is one last task to complete: Brush out the impressions your knees and toes made in the dirt.

This is an easy task to overlook. You just finished making a beauty of a dirt hole set and you remain there on your kneeling pad admiring your work. Everything is blended beautifully, nothing seems out of place, and it's ready to go. Then, you get up, lift your kneeling pad, and there they are: Two massive, smooth craters in the dirt. Leaving these craters as-is might not ruing your chances of catching a coyote but if you look at it, something is clearly off. And if something looks off or out of place to your human eyes, you can bet a shiny dollar a coyote will see something as being off.

Luckily this remedy is simple. As you take your knees off your kneeling pad to stand up, grab your kneeling pad and use it like you would use your whisk broom to blend a set. Use the pad to move around and rough up the earth to make everything look more natural. Even if you're working in a grassy area, this move is important because the brushing brings a little spring back to the grass patch after being crushed beneath you.

This is an important finisher for set practices. Leave no trace and blend where you been!
